British Airways rerouting: another flight, airline or train after cancellation

Reviewed on 10 August 2026. After British Airways cancels a covered flight, the passenger may choose rerouting at the earliest opportunity, transport later at a convenient date subject to availability, or a refund. Earliest rerouting is not necessarily the next BA service: a reasonable partner, competitor, train or bus can be required when it reaches the destination materially sooner.

Check your case in the form

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.

Step 1 of 813% completed

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Do not accept a refund if the journey is still needed. That election normally ends BA's duty to carry and can also end care while waiting.

Compare the three Article 8 choices

ChoiceBest suited toMain consequence
Earliest reroutingPassenger still needs to travel promptlyBA provides care until replacement departure
Later reroutingTrip can be moved to a chosen dateSubject to availability; immediate care may end
RefundJourney no longer serves a purposeUnused carriage is repaid and transport ends

Ask BA to record the chosen option. A voucher, flexible commercial change or open ticket is not automatically the same as statutory later rerouting.

What "earliest opportunity" requires

UK CAA advice says the airline should do what it can to offer an alternative flight, which may mean using another airline. BA's own current FAQ says comparable alternative transport can be self-booked where it cannot offer a suitable option within 24 hours. That published practice is useful, but the legal duty is not a universal instruction to wait exactly 24 hours.

Present concrete alternatives. Give flight number, operator, departure time, cabin and price. Ask BA to book or confirm reimbursement. A request supported by an available seat is stronger than a general demand for "any flight".

Comparable conditions do not guarantee an identical seat or lounge, especially during mass disruption. They do require a reasonable transport standard. A First or Club passenger moved to economy may have a separate downgrade claim even where accepting that seat was sensible.

Partner and competitor flights

British Airways can use oneworld and other commercial partners, but statutory rerouting is not confined to its agreements. If a competitor reaches the destination a day earlier and seats are available, ask BA to consider it.

An airline may cite operational difficulty or lack of ticketing arrangements. Record that response. The passenger should not buy an extravagant fare without giving BA a reasonable chance to act, unless urgency makes contact genuinely impossible.

Where only a higher cabin remains, ask BA to authorise it. A self-booked premium ticket is vulnerable if reasonable economy space existed. Conversely, a passenger should not be stranded for days merely because the only prompt seat costs more than the original fare.

Train, bus and another airport

Surface transport can be sensible for short routes, a closed airport or travel between London airports. BA's expense guidance recognises comparable alternative flight, train or bus where it cannot provide a suitable alternative.

If BA reroutes to Gatwick instead of Heathrow, or to another airport serving the same city or region, it should generally fund transport to the booked airport or another nearby destination agreed with the passenger. Ask for a rail voucher, coach or taxi where public transport is unavailable.

Keep every receipt and the reason for the mode selected. A rental car may be reasonable for a family late at night but requires evidence that safer or cheaper alternatives were unavailable.

Self-booking without losing the claim

Before purchase, save BA's cancellation notice, offered itinerary, waiting time and contact attempts. Screenshot alternative availability and price. Send BA a written request identifying the preferred option and retain any refusal or silence.

Choose the least expensive reasonable transport that meets the need. Itemise any fare difference, baggage charge and airport transfer. Do not add destination accommodation or lost activities to the rerouting invoice.

After travel, explain why the booking was necessary and how it compared with BA's proposal. BA's 24-hour wording can support a claim falling within that scenario, but earlier self-booking may still be justified under Article 8 if the facts show no suitable earliest rerouting.

Connections and return transport

On a through booking, BA must consider the ticketed final destination. Rebooking only the cancelled sector is inadequate if it breaks the onward journey. A passenger who has already flown part of a trip that no longer serves its original purpose can also require return transport to the initial departure point.

Suppose BA cancels Heathrow-New York after a passenger has arrived from Glasgow on the same reservation. If no timely alternative preserves the trip, the passenger may choose repayment of unused portions and a return to Glasgow. Document why the journey lost its purpose.

Separate tickets usually do not create the same Article 8 chain. Insurance, package rights or the second carrier's fare terms may become important.

Care while waiting for rerouting

BA remains responsible for reasonable meals, communication, hotel accommodation where necessary and hotel transport until earliest rerouting. The duty continues even where weather, ATC or security removes fixed compensation.

Ask the airline to arrange care first. If queues are impossible or no help is offered, make proportionate purchases and preserve itemised invoices. Choosing later travel for personal convenience can alter the period during which immediate care is due.

The BA care guide explains thresholds. The expense article gives a receipt schedule.

Rerouting and fixed compensation

Replacement travel does not settle the fixed claim. A short-notice cancellation can still produce GBP 220/350/520 or EUR 250/400/600. Prompt arrival on the substitute may halve the amount or fall within a notice exception.

Calculate original scheduled arrival against the rerouted arrival. Preserve first door opening at the final destination. If BA offers a goodwill voucher, ask whether it is separate from statutory payment and whether accepting it waives anything.

Submit rerouting costs and fixed compensation under distinct headings. A reimbursement for a train does not prove that BA has decided the Article 7 claim.

FAQ

Must I wait for the next British Airways flight?

Not always. Earliest rerouting can require another airline or mode when it is reasonable and reaches the destination materially sooner.

Can I book my own replacement immediately?

Give BA a reasonable opportunity to provide transport where possible. Save availability, contact attempts and refusal before buying a proportionate alternative.

Does BA's 24-hour wording define the legal right?

No. It describes BA's current self-booking guidance. Article 8 requires rerouting at the earliest opportunity on the facts.

Who pays transport between Gatwick and Heathrow?

When BA reroutes to another airport serving the same region, it can owe transfer to the booked airport or another agreed nearby destination.

Can I receive rerouting and cancellation compensation?

Yes. Replacement transport and fixed compensation address different rights, though a prompt replacement can reduce the fixed amount.
