Air Serbia London-Belgrade compensation: the direction matters

Short answer: an Air Serbia-operated flight from London to Belgrade is covered by UK261 because every airline is covered when departing the United Kingdom. The reverse Belgrade-to-London service is normally outside UK261 because inbound protection requires a UK or EU carrier, and Air Serbia is neither. Serbian passenger law remains relevant to the return direction.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

For a qualifying UK departure, fixed compensation can be GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520 per passenger, depending on distance and final-arrival delay. Refund, rerouting and care remain separate.

UK CAA and Air Serbia information was checked on 13 August 2026.

Apply the directional rule

Air Serbia-operated itineraryUK261 position
London-Belgrade directcovered as a UK departure
London-Belgrade-third country on one bookingUK261 can potentially follow the protected final destination
Belgrade-London directnormally not covered because Air Serbia is not UK or EU based
Third country-Belgrade-London on one JU bookingnormally outside UK261 for the same carrier reason
London departure carrying a partner code but operated by Air Serbiaoperator and UK departure support UK261

Ticket currency, British residence and Serbian citizenship do not alter these territorial conditions. The passenger should save the “operated by” line because codeshare can change the inbound result.

UK261 amounts for a covered Air Serbia flight

Current UK law uses:

Flight distanceFixed amount per eligible passenger
1,500 km or lessGBP 220
1,500-3,500 kmGBP 350
More than 3,500 kmGBP 520

The great-circle distance between London and Belgrade exceeds 1,500 km but remains below 3,500 km, so a qualifying direct journey ordinarily sits in the GBP 350 category. A protected onward destination beyond Belgrade can change the distance band.

For delay, final arrival normally must be at least three hours late. On long travel over 3,500 km, current UK CAA guidance distinguishes delays of three to four hours from delays over four hours; the higher GBP 520 figure applies when arrival is more than four hours late, while a 50 percent reduction can apply in the shorter window.

One booking can extend the final destination

Consider London-Belgrade-Athens under one reservation. If the delayed first service causes the protected connection to be missed, measure arrival in Athens. Belgrade is an intermediate point even though Air Serbia's operational base is there.

If London-Belgrade and Belgrade-Athens were bought separately, the UK ticket usually ends in Serbia. Loss on the second booking may still be relevant to insurance or proven damages, but it does not automatically extend UK261's final destination.

For practical connection evidence, use the Air Serbia missed-connection guide.

Cancellation creates transport choices

When a covered London departure is cancelled, Air Serbia must ordinarily offer:

  • reimbursement of the unused ticket, and return to the first point where appropriate;
  • rerouting at the earliest opportunity in comparable conditions;
  • rerouting later when the passenger chooses, subject to availability.

UK CAA guidance says suitable alternative airlines or transport may be required where they reach the destination significantly sooner. Ask Air Serbia for a workable option and document available alternatives before self-booking.

Fixed cancellation compensation depends on notice and substitute timing. At least 14 days' notice normally removes the fixed amount. Shorter notice uses the familiar seven-day and fourteen-day replacement windows, subject to extraordinary circumstances.

Air Serbia care at a UK departure

For a qualifying wait, UK261 requires food, drink and communication proportionate to the delay. An overnight disruption can require accommodation and transport between the airport and hotel. UK CAA guidance makes clear that care is due even when an extraordinary event removes fixed compensation.

Ask for vouchers and lodging before paying. If effective care is not provided, choose reasonable options and keep itemised receipts. Do not treat the GBP fixed payment as reimbursement for those costs.

A five-hour departure delay can also permit abandonment and repayment. State the choice to Air Serbia rather than becoming a no-show.

What applies on Belgrade-London?

Because Air Serbia is neither a UK nor EU carrier, its flight into the UK from Serbia is generally outside UK261. EU261 does not apply either: the journey leaves a third country and the operating airline is not EU based.

The passenger should assess Serbian passenger legislation, Air Serbia's conditions and the Montreal Convention for proven delay losses. Serbian procedure uses a 90-day carrier complaint and a 60-day response period after a complete submission.

Do not let an online UK compensation checker reverse the directional rule simply because “London” appears in the itinerary. The operating airline and origin are essential.

The Air Serbia EU261 and Serbian guide provides the corresponding inbound analysis.

Extraordinary circumstances and proof

For a covered UK departure, Air Serbia can avoid fixed compensation by proving an extraordinary event and reasonable measures. UK CAA examples distinguish ordinary component failure and wear from genuinely external conditions.

Ask for the specific weather warning, ATC restriction, airport event or security measure, together with timing and mitigation. “Late incoming aircraft” is not the root cause. A London restriction might explain the departure, while a distant earlier event needs a documented causal chain.

Claim route and evidence

Submit to Air Serbia with the PNR, ticket, operating-carrier record, UK origin, final arrival, cause and amount in pounds. Attach original and replacement boarding passes, cancellation messages and receipts.

If Air Serbia does not resolve the complaint, check the UK CAA's current approved ADR list and complaints guidance. Participation can change, and the CAA's regulatory role should not be described as an automatic individual payment order. Keep any Serbian deadline as a protective consideration where Serbian procedure may also have competence.

FAQ

Does UK261 cover Air Serbia from London to Belgrade?

Yes. All operating carriers are covered on departure from the UK, subject to the passenger and disruption conditions in the retained regulation.

Does UK261 cover Air Serbia from Belgrade to London?

Normally no. An inbound UK flight must be operated by a UK or EU carrier, and Air Serbia falls into neither category.

How much is a qualifying direct London-Belgrade claim?

The route is in the current UK distance category of 1,500-3,500 km, which uses GBP 350 per eligible passenger.

Can I claim EUR 400 instead of GBP 350 for the London departure?

The UK departure is governed by UK261 and its sterling table. Do not convert the EU amount as though both systems independently pay for the same event.

Is a hotel due after an external ATC cancellation?

Qualifying UK261 care remains due regardless of the cause. Proven external ATC action can remove fixed compensation without cancelling rerouting and assistance.
