Air France Flying Blue: award tickets, Cash & Miles and upgrades
Short answer: an Air France ticket obtained through Flying Blue can qualify for EU261 compensation. The regulation expressly covers tickets issued under frequent-flyer or commercial programmes. Fixed EUR 250-600 compensation is not reduced because Miles paid for the fare. Refund of an unused award, Cash & Miles booking or upgrade is a separate calculation governed by statutory remedies and the applicable programme and ticket conditions.

Award tickets are not excluded
EU261 does not apply to passengers travelling free or at a reduced fare not available directly or indirectly to the public. The same provision expressly includes tickets issued under a frequent-flyer programme or another commercial programme by an airline or tour operator.
A standard Flying Blue award therefore should not be rejected merely because the passenger paid Miles rather than a published cash fare. The passenger still needs:
- a confirmed reservation;
- timely presentation where required;
- a covered itinerary;
- a qualifying delay, cancellation or denied boarding;
- no proven extraordinary defence where that defence is relevant.
Keep the e-ticket, mileage debit and boarding record just as a cash passenger would.
Fixed compensation does not follow ticket price
EU261 compensation uses route distance:
| Covered journey | Standard amount per qualifying passenger |
|---|---|
| up to 1,500 km | EUR 250 |
| intra-EU over 1,500 km, or another route of 1,500-3,500 km | EUR 400 |
| another route over 3,500 km | EUR 600 |
An award seat that cost few Miles can still produce the same fixed amount as a cash ticket on the same disrupted journey. Certain long-haul arrival delays between three and four hours can allow a 50% reduction, but the mileage price itself is not the reason.
Compensation should be offered through the statutory monetary methods. Air France's higher non-refundable travel-voucher alternative requires agreement.
Award refund after Air France cancels
When Air France cancels, Article 8 offers reimbursement or rerouting. For an unused award ticket, reimbursement can involve redepositing Miles and returning eligible cash, taxes and charges. Ask for every component to be itemised.
Record before and after balances. A message saying "Miles refunded" may not address:
- taxes paid by card;
- carrier-imposed charges;
- a separate service fee;
- a paid seat or baggage option;
- an upgrade award;
- a companion's differently funded ticket.
If you choose rerouting instead, Air France should transport you in comparable conditions. It should not require a new award seat to be visible to fulfil a disruption rerouting duty.
Voluntary cancellation of an award
If the passenger cancels while Air France still operates as booked, Flying Blue and fare conditions determine redeposit, fees and deadlines. Elite status or fare type can affect flexibility.
Do not present that voluntary programme rule as EU261. Check current conditions in the account before cancelling and capture the displayed Miles, fee and cash outcome.
A no-show can have stricter consequences and can cancel remaining sectors. Act before departure and confirm the status of the return.
Cash & Miles bookings
Cash & Miles combines programme currency and money. After a statutory refund event, ask Air France to show how both components are restored. Do not accept an unexplained voucher that returns neither the original Miles nor the full eligible cash.
For fixed compensation, the mixed payment structure remains irrelevant to EUR 250-600. For ticket reimbursement or downgrade, it becomes important because those remedies relate to price or ticket value.
Keep the booking-page breakdown, card statement and Flying Blue account statement. Programme values can change, so an old promotional conversion is not reliable evidence for a current claim.
Upgrade with Miles
An upgrade award can be confirmed before travel, offered at check-in or subject to operational conditions. Preserve the confirmation and reissued boarding pass.
If Air France cancels and reroutes you without the upgraded cabin, examine two questions:
- Were the Miles or other upgrade payment returned?
- Did travel in a lower cabin engage the statutory downgrade refund?
The answers can overlap but are not identical. Article 10 uses 30%, 50% or 75% of the price attributable to the downgraded flight, following the Mennens method. Valuation can be disputed where the higher cabin was funded partly or wholly with Miles. Ask for a transparent sector calculation rather than promising one universal cash conversion.
Paid upgrades and airport offers
An upgrade paid by card should have a receipt or electronic service document. If it is not delivered, request return of the unused payment. If the confirmed ticket cabin was higher and you actually travel lower, preserve evidence for Article 10 as well.
An unconfirmed upgrade request or waitlist is different from a confirmed right to the premium cabin. Screenshot status before check-in and keep any payment authorisation reversal.
A complimentary operational upgrade does not normally create a downgrade claim when Air France returns the passenger to the cabin originally purchased on another sector.
Award travel on partner airlines
Flying Blue can issue a ticket operated by KLM, Delta or another partner. EU261 normally directs the disruption claim to the operating carrier, not automatically Air France or the loyalty programme.
Check "operated by" for every sector. Air France or Flying Blue may still manage mileage redeposit and ticket servicing as issuer. Split the requests:
- fixed compensation and operating care to the actual carrier;
- award refund and programme balance to the issuer or Flying Blue channel;
- package or agency issues to their responsible party.
The Air France codeshare guide provides the operator test.
Status benefits and paid options
Lost lounge access, preferred seating, baggage allowance or priority service does not automatically generate EUR 250-600. Fixed compensation follows flight disruption, while an unused separately paid option may be refundable.
Status benefits supplied without a separate price can be harder to value. Document what was promised, what was unavailable and any actual necessary expense caused. Avoid assigning an invented cash amount to every missed benefit.
Family and pooled Miles
Each qualifying passenger has an individual EU261 claim even if one Flying Blue member funded several awards. Ticket refund may return Miles to the account from which they were debited, while cash taxes may return to the payer's card.
Create a passenger table with ticket number, operator, Miles, cash, cabin and remedy. This prevents one redeposit from being mistaken for settlement of the whole family.
Where an adult acts for another adult, Air France can request authority. For a minor, identify the parent or guardian and avoid uploading unnecessary account credentials.
Build and submit the file
Download the e-ticket receipt, original mileage debit, upgrade confirmation, boarding passes, disruption notices, replacement itinerary and final account entries. Request separately:
- fixed EU261 compensation;
- redeposit or refund of unused ticket value;
- unused upgrade or ancillary payment;
- downgrade reimbursement where applicable;
- reasonable care expenses.
Use one existing Air France reference for the operating claim and identify any separate Flying Blue case. Do not share your programme password or full card details.

FAQ
Does an Air France award ticket qualify for EUR 600?
It can. EU261 expressly includes frequent-flyer programme tickets, and the fixed amount follows route and disruption rather than Miles paid.
Must Air France return both Miles and taxes after cancellation?
Where statutory reimbursement is chosen, every eligible ticket component should be addressed. Ask for an itemised redeposit and cash record.
Is a mileage upgrade automatically valued at a fixed cash rate?
No. Programme terms and ticket documentation matter, especially for downgrade calculations. Request a transparent sector-based explanation.
Who pays compensation on a Flying Blue partner award?
The airline that actually operated the disrupted flight normally handles EU261 compensation, while Air France or Flying Blue may service the award refund.
Can I claim for lost status benefits?
Not as automatic EU261 compensation. A separately paid unused service may be refundable, while complimentary status benefits require another basis and proof.
