TUI hotel, meals and replacement transport costs
Published:
Passengers do not have to wait hungry or sleep in an airport simply because the cause may be extraordinary. On a covered TUI disruption, reasonable care can include food, refreshments, hotel accommodation and transport between the airport and hotel. These costs are not the EUR or GBP fixed-compensation award and should be claimed separately.

Check your case in the form
Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
This page states the law as at 9 September 2026. The July 2026 EU reform has deferred application; its future nine-month claim period is not yet current.
Know when TUI should provide care
The duty depends on the applicable UK261 or EU261 framework, flight distance and expected waiting time. The familiar trigger bands are generally two hours for shorter flights, three hours for specified medium-distance flights and four hours for longer flights. Cancellation and rerouting can also create a wait requiring support.
Care must be reasonable in relation to the delay. Airlines may issue vouchers or arrange rooms directly. If the offer is inadequate or the desk is closed, passengers can make proportionate purchases and seek reimbursement. Record what was requested, what TUI offered and why self-help became necessary.
An extraordinary event can remove fixed compensation, but it does not automatically remove care. A storm closing the destination airport may explain the flight disruption while passengers still need meals and overnight accommodation.
Check the route and actual operator
TUI Airways is British; TUI fly Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and Nordic are EU carriers. A UK or EU departure can engage the corresponding rules regardless of operator. An inbound flight starting outside Europe generally needs a UK or EU operator for the matching regime.
Read “operated by” on the ticket. A TUI package from Antalya to Manchester operated by TUI Airways is potentially within UK261. If a Turkish partner operates it, the TUI logo and British passenger address do not create UK261 coverage by themselves.
The operating airline normally handles flight care. The package organiser may simultaneously owe holiday assistance, but the two roles should be described accurately.
Choose reasonable meals, rooms and transport
Meals should match the length and time of the wait. Keep itemised receipts rather than card slips. Alcohol, luxury dining and unrelated shopping are difficult to justify. Where dietary or medical needs affect the choice, note them briefly.
For an overnight delay, a reasonable hotel and airport–hotel transfer can be claimed when the airline fails to arrange them. Ask the airline first where practical. If nearby rooms are sold out, screenshot availability and prices before booking a more distant option. A taxi can be reasonable where no shuttle or public transport is operating.
Replacement transport has two meanings that should not be confused. A taxi to the hotel is care. A new airline ticket to the destination is rerouting. Before buying the latter, request rerouting from the carrier, document its failure and choose a proportionate itinerary.
Calculate actual costs without duplication
Care is reimbursed at reasonable actual cost, not multiplied by the number of passengers. A couple sharing one GBP 140 room claims GBP 140, not GBP 280. Two individual meals can each be claimed. Convert currencies transparently and retain payment evidence.
Worked example: a family of three waits overnight in Palma after a TUI Airways cancellation to Birmingham. TUI provides no room and its desk closes. The family records the closure, books one mid-range room for EUR 165, spends EUR 48 on dinner and EUR 27 on a taxi. Those are three care lines. Any UK261 fixed compensation is calculated separately per passenger; any unused-holiday complaint belongs under package rights.
Refund or rerouting, fixed compensation, package redress and Montreal baggage damages must not be rolled into the receipt total. Use headings and subtotals so the reviewer can see that no cost is duplicated.
Claim expenses with a clear necessity record
Start with flight, route, date, operator and length of wait. State what assistance was requested and offered. Number each receipt and add its purpose, passengers covered and currency. Include photographs of closed desks or screenshots of unanswered messages where useful.
TUI's UK delay channel deals with TUI Airways passengers and directs customers of other carriers to that airline. If TUI Airways does not resolve an eligible expense complaint, its contact guidance identifies AviationADR. EU operators have their own complaint and escalation routes.
Do not discard receipts after a fixed-compensation payment. A payment labelled compensation does not necessarily settle separately itemised care unless the settlement terms clearly say so and were knowingly accepted.

Frequently asked questions
Must TUI provide a hotel during an extraordinary disruption?
Potentially yes. Extraordinary circumstances may exclude fixed compensation, but reasonable care is a separate duty on covered flights.
Can I book any hotel I want?
Choose a reasonable option in the circumstances, ask the carrier first where possible and preserve evidence if scarcity forces a higher price.
Are airport-to-hotel taxis recoverable?
They can be where overnight accommodation is necessary and TUI provides no transfer. Explain why the chosen transport was reasonable.
Can I claim meals without itemised receipts?
It is harder. Provide the best available payment proof and explanation, but itemised receipts are much stronger evidence of what was bought.
Is a replacement flight a care expense?
No. It belongs under rerouting or replacement carriage. Keep it separate from meals, hotel accommodation and local hotel transfers.
