Jet2 flight compensation: when EU261 or UK261 applies
A Jet2 delay, cancellation or involuntary denied boarding can be covered by UK261, EU261 or both territorial frameworks, depending on the route. A qualifying UK claim uses the UK compensation bands, while an EU departure can engage EU261 even though Jet2 is a UK airline. Fixed compensation is separate from rerouting, refunds and reasonable meals or hotel costs. Jet2holidays customers also retain package rights, but the operating airline remains the usual respondent for the flight claim.

Jet2.com flights carry the LS code. The booking may have been sold directly, through Jet2holidays or by an agent. Start with the flight shown as disrupted and the legal operator, then identify the correct regime.
| Route pattern | Likely starting point | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| departure from the UK | UK261 | any operating airline can be covered on departure |
| Jet2-operated arrival into the UK | UK261 | Jet2 is a UK carrier |
| departure from an EU or EEA airport | EU261 | operator nationality does not remove departure coverage |
| outbound UK-EU journey | UK261 | avoid duplicate recovery under overlapping rules |
| separate local flight outside UK/EU | local law and contract | Jet2 branding elsewhere does not extend either regime |
UK261 and EU261 are related but distinct
UK261 retained the structure of the European regulation after Brexit. It protects qualifying departures from the United Kingdom and certain arrivals operated by UK carriers. EU261 protects departures from the EU or EEA regardless of carrier and qualifying arrivals operated by an EU or EEA carrier.
Jet2 is UK-established, not an EU carrier. A Jet2 flight from Spain to the United Kingdom is within EU261 because it departs the EU and may also need UK analysis. A Jet2 flight from Turkey to the UK can be within UK261 because Jet2 is a UK carrier. A flight from Turkey to an EU country does not gain EU261 arrival coverage merely from an LS number.
Where more than one regime appears relevant, the purpose is not to collect twice for the same disruption. Identify the competent claim path, amount and enforcement route for the actual journey.
Compensation bands and the three-hour test
Under EU261, the standard distance bands are EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600. Under UK261, the corresponding current statutory bands are expressed in pounds. The UK Civil Aviation Authority publishes the applicable figures and thresholds; use the value in force for the disruption rather than converting a euro figure yourself.
For delay compensation, measure arrival at the final destination on the protected booking. The relevant moment is generally when at least one aircraft door opens and passengers are permitted to leave, not touchdown. A missed protected connection can therefore be more important than the delay on the first sector.
Jet2 mainly sells direct point-to-point journeys, but a holiday package can combine services and transfers. Do not treat a coach transfer or separately arranged onward flight as an air connection unless the documents show one protected air itinerary.
What a cancellation lets you choose
When Jet2 cancels, the passenger generally chooses between reimbursement and rerouting. The earliest reasonable alternative can matter far more than a credit note, particularly during school holidays. Ask Jet2 to offer a workable route; do not buy a premium replacement immediately without giving the airline a reasonable chance to perform, unless urgency and failed assistance make self-help necessary.
Fixed compensation is a separate question. Notice at least 14 days before departure normally prevents the statutory fixed payment. Later notice requires a comparison of the offered alternative's departure and arrival times, as well as the reason for cancellation.
A Jet2holidays package can create additional duties for the organiser if the holiday changes materially. Those rights do not automatically replace UK261 or EU261. Keep the package confirmation and the flight-only elements of the itinerary.
Meals, accommodation and replacement travel
Jet2's disruption form distinguishes compensation from reimbursement of expenses. Reasonable food and drink, necessary overnight accommodation and transport linked to that accommodation can be claimed when the airline should have provided care. Itemised receipts are essential; a bank statement alone may not establish what was purchased.
Care is not the same as consequential loss. Car parking, lost wages, unused event tickets and child or pet care are not normally reimbursed as statutory care. Travel insurance or another contractual claim may address some of those losses.
If a departure delay reaches five hours and the passenger decides not to travel, a refund right may arise. Record that choice clearly. Continuing the journey and later asking for the unused ticket price can be inconsistent unless another rule applies.
Extraordinary circumstances
External air traffic control restrictions, airport closure, serious weather or security events may exclude fixed compensation. They do not automatically remove the airline's duties of care and rerouting. Jet2 must still connect the external event to the flight and show that the consequences could not have been avoided with reasonable measures.
Operational staffing, routine aircraft faults and a tight rotation are not transformed into extraordinary circumstances by using a broad phrase such as “outside our control”. Ask for the event, location, time and steps taken to recover the schedule.
When a disruption has several causes, chronology matters. An initial weather restriction does not necessarily explain every later hour after the airport reopened. Preserve airport notices and Jet2 messages rather than relying only on a retrospective response.
Using Jet2's claim form
Jet2 asks for claimant and passenger details, the disrupted flight, booking reference, documents and bank information. Submit a separate claim where the form requires one per disrupted flight. Attach the boarding pass, itinerary and evidence of arrival. List care expenses with itemised receipts and their currency.
Jet2's terms request that passengers first submit directly and allow the specified response period. Save the acknowledgement and all uploads. If the answer is unsatisfactory, the appropriate next body depends on the route. The UK Civil Aviation Authority's Passenger Advice and Complaints Team can provide the route described by Jet2, while eligible Spain departures can use AESA's alternative dispute-resolution process after first claiming from the airline.
Use the airline A-Z directory if the booking shows another operator. For the general distinction between regimes, see UK261 versus EU261.
FAQ: Frequently asked questions
Does EU261 cover a Jet2 flight from Spain to the UK?
Yes, an EU departure is generally within EU261 regardless of Jet2's UK establishment. UK rules may also be relevant, but compensation cannot be recovered twice for the same disruption.
Is a Jet2 flight from Turkey to the UK protected?
It can fall within UK261 because Jet2 is a UK carrier arriving in the UK. EU261 does not apply merely because the destination is near or connected to the EU.
Does a Jet2holidays booking reduce flight compensation?
No. Package rights and statutory passenger rights can coexist. The same specific loss cannot be reimbursed twice, and the operator of the flight remains central.
Can I claim a self-booked replacement flight?
Potentially, if Jet2 failed to provide required rerouting and the replacement was necessary and reasonable. Preserve attempts to obtain help, available alternatives and the full receipt.
Are air traffic control delays compensable?
External ATC restrictions are commonly extraordinary, so fixed compensation may be unavailable. Care and rerouting obligations can still remain.
What evidence should accompany the online claim?
Provide the booking reference, passenger names, flight number and date, boarding pass, disruption notices, final arrival proof and itemised receipts. Keep the submission confirmation.
