Aegean Airlines compensation: delays, cancellations and Athens connections
Aegean Airlines is an EU carrier. Its qualifying delayed, cancelled or overbooked flights can fall under EU261 on departures from the EU or EEA and on Aegean-operated returns from third countries into that area. A delay of at least three hours at the protected final destination may produce EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 per passenger. A missed connection in Athens can count to the final destination when the sectors share one booking. Check whether Aegean or Olympic Air actually operated each flight.

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Aegean uses A3; Olympic Air commonly uses OA. They are related but remain distinct operating carriers. The name printed most prominently on the itinerary is not a substitute for the operated by entry.
| Route or event | Deciding question | What may be available |
|---|---|---|
| delayed direct flight | arrival at least three hours late? | fixed compensation and care |
| missed Athens connection | one booking and final arrival time? | rerouting, care and possible compensation |
| cancellation | when was notice received? | refund or alternative flight, possible compensation |
| UK-Greece journey | which airport and operator connect the trip to each regime? | EU261 or UK261 analysis |
| A3 code operated by OA or partner | who supplied aircraft and crew? | claim against the actual operator |
Coverage in Europe and beyond
An Aegean departure from Greece, Germany, France, Italy or another EU or EEA state is within EU261. Aegean's status as a Greek airline also allows the regulation to reach its own qualifying inbound flight from a third country to the EU. This can matter on routes between Athens and the Middle East, North Africa or other non-EU destinations.
For a UK departure, UK261 has its own territorial test. An Aegean-operated arrival from Greece to the UK can also raise UK rules because of the destination and operator relationship. Identify one valid route rather than assuming the regimes create two payouts.
An Olympic Air sector should be claimed against Olympic Air if it is the actual operator. A codeshare partner's marketing number does not transfer statutory liability by itself.
Calculating delay at the final destination
The three-hour threshold applies to arrival at the protected endpoint, normally measured when an aircraft door opens. On a direct Thessaloniki-Frankfurt journey, that endpoint is clear. On a one-booking journey through Athens, it may be the final island, European city or long-haul destination.
Consider a passenger arriving in Athens 50 minutes late and missing the protected onward sector. If the replacement reaches the final airport six hours late, the relevant delay may be six hours, not 50 minutes. Cause, coverage and operating carrier still have to be established.
Do not aggregate separate tickets automatically. Self-transfers frequently require fresh check-in and leave the passenger carrying the missed-connection risk. Keep both booking references and any guarantee purchased from an intermediary.
Distance bands and island routes
EU261 uses EUR 250 for journeys up to 1,500 kilometres, EUR 400 for other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 kilometres and longer intra-EU flights, and EUR 600 for other journeys over 3,500 kilometres. Ticket cost and fare family do not change the fixed amount.
Greek domestic and island sectors often use the first band. A connected itinerary can require measuring to a more distant final destination. Do not simply add the flown kilometres; use the relevant protected journey and accepted distance method.
Each eligible passenger has an individual claim. A reward ticket offered to the public can still qualify, while a person travelling entirely free under a non-public staff concession requires separate analysis.
Cancellation and seasonal rerouting
When Aegean cancels, choose between refund and rerouting. On a thin or seasonal route, the earliest practical alternative may involve another airport, ferry or carrier. Ask Aegean to make a workable proposal and clarify transfer to the booked destination.
If the airline offers a nearby airport, necessary ground transport to the booked airport or another agreed point should be addressed. Preserve taxi, bus or ferry receipts and explain why the cost was reasonable.
Fixed compensation depends on notice and replacement timings. Fourteen days is the main notice boundary; within that period, compare the precise statutory windows and examine the cause. Refund and rerouting rights do not disappear merely because notice was early.
Assistance and extraordinary circumstances
Meals and communications become due after the distance-based waiting threshold. An overnight replacement can require hotel accommodation and transfer. Buy only proportionate essentials when direct support fails and obtain itemised receipts.
Greek summer operations can be affected by strong winds, airport capacity and external air traffic management. A genuinely exceptional restriction may exclude fixed compensation. The carrier should still identify the event, its effect on this flight and the measures used to avoid or reduce the delay.
Routine technical faults, crew planning and ordinary operational knock-on effects are not automatically extraordinary. Ask for more than a generic reference to “flight safety” or “operational reasons”.
The Aegean claim and HCAA route
Aegean's contact form contains a passenger-rights category specifically referencing EC 261/2004. Submit the booking and ticket numbers, affected flight, actual final arrival, requested amount and evidence. If Olympic Air operated, select or address the correct company.
The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority is the designated Greek body for Regulation 261 enforcement. A complaint to HCAA is not a substitute for a complete monetary demand to the carrier and does not guarantee private recovery in every dispute. Another national body can be relevant for a disruption at its airport.
Keep the Aegean case number and response. A refusal should be tested against the actual event, not answered with a generic legal quotation. Court venue and limitation depend on the contract and itinerary.
The airline A-Z directory helps distinguish A3 from OA. The delayed-flight guide explains why final arrival, rather than the delay at Athens, determines the compensation test.
FAQ: Frequently asked questions
Is an Aegean return from outside the EU protected?
It can be when Aegean operates the flight into the EU. Aegean is an EU carrier; check the operator and destination shown on the ticket.
Who pays when Olympic Air operated my Aegean booking?
The statutory claim is normally directed to Olympic Air as operating carrier. Group ownership and an A3 marketing code do not remove that distinction.
Does a 50-minute delay in Athens qualify?
Not on its own, but if it caused a missed protected connection and arrival at the final destination was at least three hours late, a claim may arise.
Can I choose a refund after Aegean cancels?
Yes. Reimbursement and rerouting are alternatives controlled by the passenger. Consider whether the rest of the journey remains useful before choosing.
Are strong winds automatically extraordinary?
No conclusion is automatic. Wind can be extraordinary when it genuinely prevents operation, but the airline must connect conditions and reasonable measures to the flight.
What should I send through the EC261 contact category?
Send PNR, ticket and flight details, boarding passes, notice messages, replacement itinerary, final arrival evidence, passenger list, bank details and itemised receipts.
